Terms of Use
Version 2026-09-08. Effective 2026-09-08
World Crochet Map ("WCM", "the service") is a free, voluntary world map of people who crochet, with a public gallery of creations and community chat rooms. These Terms form a contract between you and the operator identified in the Legal Notice. By using the service you accept them; if you do not, please do not use it.
The French version is the reference text where French law applies; translations, including this English one, are provided to help you understand the Terms. Nothing in these Terms limits mandatory consumer-protection rights you hold under the law of your country of residence.
1. Who may use the service
You must be at least 16 years old to add yourself to the map, publish a creation or post in a chat room. If you are under 16, you may browse the public map but must not create content. We do not knowingly keep content from under-16s and remove it when we become aware of it. Parents and guardians can write to mapelote.fr@gmail.com.
You must be able to enter into a binding contract under the law of your country. If you use the service on behalf of a business, you confirm you are authorised to bind it.
2. The service
WCM lets you add a dot (display name, avatar or photo, approximate location, optional social links) to a public world map, publish photos of your own crochet work, leave short public notes, and chat in community rooms. There is no account or password for the map: a private management link stored in your browser lets you edit or delete your own dot; your e-mail address is used to recover it.
The service is provided free of charge. We may add, change, suspend or withdraw features at any time. Where a paid feature exists, its specific conditions are shown before purchase; while paid features are paused, no purchase can be made.
3. Your content
You keep all rights to the content you publish (photos, text, name, avatar). You grant the operator a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, store, resize, display and distribute that content within the service and its previews, share cards and social posts presenting the map, for as long as the content is online and for a reasonable period afterwards for caching and backups. You can end this licence for a given item by deleting it.
You confirm that you own or have the necessary rights to everything you publish, that photos of crochet work show your own work, and that your content does not include another person's personal information without their consent.
4. Rules of conduct
You agree to follow the Community Guidelines. In short: no illegal content, no hate, harassment or threats, no sexual content, no content involving minors, no spam, scams, malware or unsolicited advertising, no impersonation, no scraping or automated collection of members' data, no attempt to break, overload or bypass the security of the service.
5. Moderation, reports and sanctions
Anyone can report content through the report buttons or the Report content page. We review reports and may hide, restrict or remove content, freeze an area of the map, or ban a member, temporarily or permanently, when content or behaviour breaches these Terms, the Guidelines or the law. Where the law requires it we inform the author of the decision and its reasons; the author may contest a decision by writing to mapelote.fr@gmail.com. Repeated or manifestly unfounded reports may themselves be restricted.
We may also act without prior notice when required by law, by a court or authority order, or to protect people or the service.
6. Copyright complaints
Rights holders can follow the procedure in the Copyright policy.
7. Deleting your dot and content
You can delete your dot at any time from the device that created it ("My profile" on the map), which also removes your creations and notes. If you lost access, write to mapelote.fr@gmail.com from the e-mail address you gave; we will verify and delete. Public statistics (counts per country or city) are aggregated and are not affected by an individual deletion.
8. Figures, availability and warranties
Counts, rankings and country or city pages reflect voluntary participation in WCM. They are not a census and do not claim to represent every crocheter anywhere.
The service is provided "as is" and "as available", to the extent permitted by law without warranty of uninterrupted availability, accuracy or fitness for a particular purpose. We do our best to keep it running and to protect your data but cannot guarantee that it will never be interrupted, lost or accessed without authorisation.
9. Liability
Members are responsible for the content they publish and for their interactions with other members, online or offline. The operator is a hosting provider for member content and does not monitor it in advance. To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, the operator's liability for a free service is limited to cases of wilful misconduct or gross negligence, and excludes indirect losses. Nothing excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or fraud.
10. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. The version and effective date appear at the top of this page. Material changes are announced on the site; continuing to use the service after the effective date means you accept the new version. If you disagree, delete your dot and stop using the service.
11. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by French law. If you are a consumer in the European Union, you also benefit from the mandatory protections of the law of your country of residence and may bring a claim before your local courts. Before any dispute, please contact us at mapelote.fr@gmail.com. Most issues are solved quickly.
